Victoria Symphony Announces 2020/2021 Season
Victoria, BC – The Victoria Symphony launched it 2020/21 season today, unveiling concert details for Maestro Kluxen’s fourth season as Music Director. Says Kluxen, “it has been wonderful to experience our audiences embracing adventurous directions in programming and sharing our enthusiasm in exploring new ways to communicate great symphonic music to everyone in our community.”
This season focuses on telling a unique musical story in every concert. We open with The Big Picture featuring local violinist Timothy Chooi in Korngold’s Violin Concerto alongside Mussorgsky’s showpiece Pictures of an Exhibition. Naked Classics returns with Paul Rissmann presenting Stravinsky’s Petrushka and later in the season, the orchestra will perform Brahms’ A German Requiem, a personal highlight for Kluxen.
This season welcomes some exceptional musical talent including international superstar Jan Lisiecki returning to perform Mendelssohn, local favourites Terence Tam and Lorraine Min and newcomers, violinist Cloë Hanslip and harpist Valerie Muzzolini.
The Under the Northern Lights theme continues with treasured guest conductor David Danzmayr conducting one of the greatest Scandinavian masterpieces: Stenhammar’s Symphony No. 2. Other concerts including Sibelius Symphony No. 1 and Svendsen’s Romeo and Juliet round out the theme.
Sean O’Loughlin returns for his third season as Principal Pops Conductor bringing Symphonic Sci-fi, the Best of the Beatles and the Doo Wop Project. Also on the program is Movies Meet the Masters featuring violinist Lisa Dondlinger combining movie music with classical favourites.
Other highlights include Heather Rankin from Cape Breton as the Christmas special, collaborations with Vox Humana Chamber Choir, the Pacific Opera Chorus, Victoria Choral Society and plenty more.
This season will again feature the VS performing over 60 concerts in our theatres and throughout our communities. Our Masterworks Saturday and Sunday performances, Classics and Concerts for Kids series and holiday specials (Messiah, Christmas with Heather Rankin and A Viennese New Year’s) will be at the Farquhar at UVic.
