The Victoria Symphony welcomes new people who bring energy, talent, and commitment to support the Symphony’s music and mission. We offer a wide variety of opportunities to make a contribution to the organization and enjoy symphonic music. Volunteering with the Victoria Symphony will connect you with others interested in supporting the Symphony and offer you a chance to attend select concerts as our way of saying thanks.

Splash Around Town: July 22 – 31

After two summers without our Symphony in the Summer Festival, we are thrilled to invite you to be a part of the 31th annual festival Splash Around Town! This free outdoor event attracts over 40,000 people and this year features 10 days of concerts around downtown Victoria including a day of musical activities concluding with a fantastic live performance by the Victoria Symphony on the Lawn of the BC Legislature – complete with fireworks display! The festival is made possible by over 400 volunteer positions.

The Audience Relations team is the largest volunteer team, made up of over 100 volunteers. Members of this team are the most visible on site for the audience and their primary focus is to liaise with audience members. We recommend this position for outgoing people who are comfortable standing and walking outdoors for 5-6 hours and comfortable working with large crowds.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to questions and concerns from members of the public
  • Direct people to various locations on site – info booth, food vendors, bathrooms
  • Monitor safety and security of crowd
  • Ensure safe flow of pedestrian traffic
  • Secure area around the festival site, including  Government and Belleville Streets; and Legislature, Empress and Royal BC Museum Grounds
  • Assist with signage and schlepping (if required); some lifting may be required

Volunteers will be assigned to a specific area depending on your availability. More details will be sent out once we establish our teams!

Help the Victoria Symphony to pack up and stay sustainable. In order to make our festival as sustainable as possible we want to show our gratitude and respect to the downtown core by returning each site to the way we found it.

Join us for a fun and fulfilling day on Monday August 1, 2022. This is a physical role and volunteers will be required to lift objects and move extensively through the festival zones.

Our collections volunteers are integral to the success of our fundraising efforts. Volunteers are needed to collect donations from our donation barrels and ensure the proper transport and monitoring of all cash.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect cash from Donation Barrels, Merchandise Tent, and Roving Donations Teams
  • Walk through the audience to transport large amounts of cash to sorting and counting areas
  • Communicate with other volunteers
  • Communicate with Security as necessary
  • Any duties required by the Collections Coordinator

We recommend this position to those who have previous cash handling experience and a high level of appreciation for security.

Splash Around Town relies on the donations of attendees to help put the event on, and our donations teams help raise over $35,000 at the event! Donation Barrel volunteers work in pairs at a barrel, greeting passersby and asking if they’ve had a chance to make a donation.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up Barrel location with signage (afternoon shift)
  • Greet members of the public as they enter the event site
  • Engage public to solicit donations for Victoria Symphony
  • Answer questions and direct public to various locations on site
  • Distribute event programs, stickers as appropriate
  • Assist with the flow of traffic at event
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary
  • Ensure that barrel donations are retrieved and barrels taken down at the end of event (evening shift)

We recommend this position for anyone who has great people skills, an outgoing personality, able to continuously approach the public directly for donations, and wants to help make Splash Around Town happen every year!

Are you a customer service expert and someone who’s always smiling? The Band of Heroes and VIP Relations volunteers will assist VS staff at the Band of Heroes tent in greeting and directing the donors, sponsors, and VIPs who contribute to the success of Splash Around Town.

Responsibilities:

  • Checking in Band of Heroes members and VIPs as they arrive on site
  • Providing directions to various locations on site
  • Secure the area around the Band of Heroes and VIP tent
  • Respond to questions and concerns, and direct people to various locations on site

Are you artistic and love working with children? Try working in our Family Zone!

The Family Zone happens in the afternoon and is attended by over 3,000 people! Kids of all ages come for face-painting, to try out instruments in our Instrument Petting Zoo and to watch children’s performers.

Responsibilities:

  • Help children try to play classical musical instruments
  • Set up and clean instruments
  • Keep activity stations stocked, clean, inviting and safe
  • Provide a safe and fun experience for children
  • Assist with clean up of Instrument Petting Zoo at end of shift

Note that the Petting Zoo position requires musical experience.

We recommend this position for anyone who is confident, enthusiastic, and comfortable communicating with children, has artistic experience, and always has a smile on their face. This position requires a criminal record check (free from your local police station).

This new role is perfect for volunteers who have a wide skillset and are willing to work with whichever team needs their skills most! If you sign up for this shift, you will be assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator according to festival needs to work with the volunteer team that best suits your skills and availability as indicated on your Application Form.

Are you a customer service expert and someone who’s always smiling? Help greet and seat the audience in our Grandstand and Band of Heroes seating areas!

Grandstand and Band of Heroes volunteers work with a Victoria Symphony staff member to greet and seat VIPs in special seating on site. This includes setting up the seats, selling any leftover seats and making sure our VIPs have a great night.

Responsibilities

  • Afternoon shift – Tape off seating in Grandstand (ticketed seating at Splash)
  • Evening shift – Remove tape from Grandstand
  • Meet & greet guests
  • Check in guests and provide them with lanyards/wristbands and programs
  • Sell Grandstand tickets, process credit and cash transactions accurately
  • Keep the Grandstand seats free for guests with tickets
  • Respond to questions and concerns, and direct people to various locations on site
  • Monitor safety and security of crowd, ensure safe flow of pedestrian traffic
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary

We recommend this position for anyone who can keep a cool head in stressful situations, has cash handling and customer service experience, and is familiar with both the Victoria Symphony and the festival. The ability to deal with extremely high traffic levels of customers and be polite and diplomatic is crucial. This position may require some lifting.

Do you have experience working with money and a history of excellent customer service? Help us sell merchandise!

Our Merchandise and Information Tent volunteers work with Victoria Symphony staff to provide information to audience members about the event. Working from one of two tents on site, Merch volunteers use pinpads to complete credit and debit transactions, maintain the security of merchandise, and provide excellent customer service to all tent visitors.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with set up and/or take down of Merchandise & Information Displays
  • Engage public to promote and sell Victoria Symphony merchandise
  • Provide information about Splash Around Town and the Victoria Symphony
  • Answer questions and direct public to information areas
  • Take orders from customers for merchandise
  • Process credit and cash transactions accurately
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary
  • Secure and track merchandise inventory
  • Some lifting is required

We recommend this position for anyone who is friendly, had cash handling and customer service experience, and is familiar with both the Victoria Symphony and the festival. The ability to deal with extremely high traffic levels of customers and keep calm in stressful situations is essential. This position requires some lifting and a criminal record check (free from your local police station).

Join us the day before for a behind-the-scenes experience of how everything comes together. This is a physical role and volunteers must be comfortable with extensive movement and lifting heavy objects.

Volunteer Services people make sure every volunteer on site has what they need to do their job. From manning the water distribution to distributing food to volunteers to checking volunteers in and out, this position is for friendly and organized individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Be the primary contact for all volunteers on site
  • Confirm extra t-shirts and left over volunteer packages at Volunteer Tent
  • Ensure volunteers have checked in and received water pouch, meal ticket and symphony voucher
  • Ensure volunteers have t-shirt and button
  • Remind volunteers they can pick up their food after their shift (with their ticket) or before if they’re on one of the last shifts of the night
  • Remind volunteers of after party (date and time are to be confirmed)
  • Ensure volunteers check out and receive food ticket
  • Distribute water to volunteers and audience members
  • Some heavy lifting may be required

We recommend this position for anyone who is a people pleaser, loves being helpful, and has attention to detail. This position requires some lifting.

We sometimes need help around the office, organizing storage rooms, moving boxes, and getting ready for concerts. If you like a smaller group and less of a time commitment volunteer opportunity, this is the one for you.
