The Concept
Imagine 1,200 students from grade school through high school together for one performance on one stage. Brought together by the unifying power of music, these students will spend hundreds of hours preparing for this concert and the performance of a lifetime with the Victoria Symphony.
This one-of -a-kind concert experience took place Sunday, April 9, 2017 @ Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
The Celebration
Rink Cycle II is designed to be the largest participatory gathering of children in Victoria’s history. Up to 2,000 Greater Victoria school children will come together with the Victoria Symphony to create music, movement and storytelling. Lead by Maestra Tania Miller, this showcase will explore Canadian culture through symphonic music, choral singing, modern dance, First Nations drumming, band music, First Nations stick playing and more.
The concert will feature First Nations culture, music from across Canada and celebrations from national events including the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Expo ’87.
Rink Cycle II is a celebration of the joy of music in the community and our love of our country. This concert would would not be possible without the commitment of thousands of school students, their educators and administrators within the Greater Victoria School District. This project is the culmination of hundreds of hours of coordination, practice and planning as well as the vision of Maestra Tania Miller and music education specialist Marcelline Moody.
We invite you to experience this once-in-a-lifetime concert experience.
What teachers say…
“At the last Rink Cycle, my students enjoyed meeting and making music with their peers from other schools. I had a very small group of participants and it was fun to watch their excitement grow when they began to play as part of a large group. After the event, it was clear that the professional nature of the Symphony members also had an impact on them, I could tell they were inspired by the whole experience both by the music and the community aspect of the event.” – Jenn Treble, Music Teacher, Esquimalt High
