Invitation for Expressions of Interest: Board of Directors and Board Committees

Victoria Symphony is a highly versatile Canadian orchestra that inspires, educates, and captivates our community through the transformational power of music.

Victoria Symphony is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors, comprising a dedicated group of business and community leaders who contribute their experience, insight and resources to guide the Symphony and help it grow.

The Board seeks to develop connections with other community and business leaders who understand the importance of the Victoria Symphony to the fabric of the community.  We are asking those who wish to be considered for future Board or Committee membership to let us know of their interest.

About Victoria Symphony

For over 80 years, Victoria Symphony has engaged audiences, created drama, and stirred emotion through the power of live music.  As one of British Columbia’s largest performing arts organizations, Victoria Symphony performs repertoire from classical to pops, new music, opera and ballet, and continues to delight audiences of all ages.

Victoria Symphony weathered the COVID storm through creative deliveries outside of the concert hall and from government and donor support. We are excited to be back in-person with our audiences.

About the Board and its Committees

The current Board of Directors consists of 13 directors elected by the members of the Victoria Symphony Society and two representatives appointed by the members of Victoria Symphony Orchestra. The CEO also serves on the Board as an ex officio non-voting director.

The term for an Elected Director is three years, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. Normally, the Board meets eight times a year.

Board members also participate on one or more Committees. Currently there is an Executive Committee, Governance & Nominating Committee, Finance & Audit Committee, Planning & Vision Committee, and Engagement & Outreach Committee.

Members of our Board are experienced and committed leaders, adding their guidance, insight and resources to the Victoria Symphony Society. The Board is focused on oversight of the strategic plan, and overseeing the efficient and financially sound operation of the business through the CEO.  They are expected to understand and embrace the principles and objectives of the Victoria Symphony Society.  Board members actively contribute to the organization, attend events, and represent and promote Victoria Symphony to their contacts and the general public.

Who we are looking for on the Board of Directors and Board Committees

Our current 3-year strategic plan was put in place in 2021 and emphasizes the importance of cultivating and connecting with our community through the performing arts.  It also recognizes the rapidly changing environment for orchestral symphonies.  With that in mind, we are seeking dynamic individuals to join our Board as we conclude the final year of the 2021-2024 strategic plan and create the next one.

We are committed to the best principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all recruiting and  strive to create an engaged, collegial board by bringing together persons with diverse backgrounds, skills, and experience, including but not limited to the following areas:

  • Representing the communities we serve
  • Understanding of how creative, new technologies can be used
  • Demonstrated interest in orchestral music and the audiences we reach
  • Expertise with oversight of financial management and financial reporting
  • Experience in:
    • Business
    • Community outreach
    • Marketing
    • Fundraising
    • Network building
ARE YOU INTERESTED?

If this leadership opportunity interests you, we’d like to hear from you.  The Nominating Committee considers potential Board members on a regular basis, taking into account current and future needs.  Elections to the Board take place at the Annual General Meeting, which is normally held in September.  We are also open to having non-Board members join Committees at any time – if that is of interest to you, please let us know!

Please send a brief introductory letter expressing your interest with a summary of your background to the Chair of the Governance & Nominating Committee at administration@outlook.com. Please include “Letter of Interest” in the subject line of your email.

Thank you for your interest in the Victoria Symphony!
