Even as a fledgling conductor, a 16-year-old Christian Kluxen was already taken with Tchaikovsky’s music. Its mix of romantic beauty with bittersweet melancholy pairs well with Barber’s Violin Concerto, especially as interpreted by the internationally-renowned, Victoria-born violinist, Timothy Chooi. Rodney Sharman’s update of Scarlatti’s music provides a modern perspective of its easy-going virtuosity and surprising dissonances.
