I have been incredibly touched by the welcome I have received as Music Director of the Victoria Symphony. Now it is time for me to welcome you to join us for the 17/18 season, which marks the launch of a new era for the orchestra, our audiences and culture in Victoria.
For the season opening we are joined by a beloved friend, Stewart Goodyear, who will perform one of my personal favourites: Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, followed by Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1, made possible through generous donations from our sponsors and donors, with whom we continue to build and maintain strong and prosperous relations.
Celebrating our rich Canadian music life, we are privileged to present world class Canadian soloists such as James Ehnes, Jon Kimura Parker, Alain Lefèvre and Jonathan Crow as well as four Canadian world premiers. Former Music Director Tania Miller returns to lead a grandiose program of Rachmaninoff, and later in 2018 we will be honouring no less than three composer anniversaries, Gounod, Debussy and Rossini, within one single concert!
A grand season demands a grand finale: Verdi’s Requiem, where a stellar cast of Scandinavian and Canadian soloists join forces in front of the the Victoria Symphony and the Victoria Choral Society – a spectacular event not to miss!
