Our 75th season underscored for us, musicians and audiences alike, just how much our orchestra has grown. For fourteen years, and with the support of many, Tania Miller and Symphony musicians have lifted our orchestra from a modest small-town ensemble to one of the best regional orchestras in North America.
Since 1940, costs of producing concerts including instruments, theatre rentals, production, salaries and more have continued to increase. In 2016, ticket sales contributed only 23% towards expenses; a continuing downward trend for most arts organizations. At present, government funding pays for 24% of expenses and philanthropic Victoria Symphony donors contribute the rest.
The VS is undergoing a fundamental change: preparing to say goodbye to Tania Miller and move forward with new Music Director Christian Kluxen. The Artistic Excellence Campaign shines the spotlight on the future, thus ensuring a vibrant and resilient tomorrow and keeping music alive for future generations to enjoy.

Tania Miller Defines “Artistic Excellence”
Artistic Excellence is a coming together of talent, energy, commitment from every member of the orchestra with a priority for a unified, defining goal for the sound and interpretation of every piece. Artistic Excellence is also the quality of the music that we program, and the life-affirming and life-changing experiences that all of us, musicians and audience alike experience in the face of the genius of the very best compositions and expressions of art.
Artistic Excellence is the freedom to express this art, in the way it was intended, and the freedom to celebrate and expose ourselves to every possible artistic voice, from this time and country to other times and other countries. In so doing, we open ourselves to the world – the human world and the world of thought and expression.
In order to fulfill the challenges and the growth that we experience in presenting each piece of fine music, we need grit and determination, we need a vision for where we are going, and we need to have someone cheering us on along the way. The orchestra needs support in order to continue on its path.
We want to be happy living in Victoria. We want to be inspired and moved, intellectually changing and progressing all of the time, right here in our own community. When we have this, we have a beautiful, far-reaching human experience available to us in Victoria.
That’s why the support for the Victoria Symphony is critical and at the same time joyful. We become a part of a community that shapes the final outcome of artistic excellence, and together invest in the music that we share and experience together- musicians and audience alike.

In April 2008 I attended my first Victoria Symphony Orchestra Signature Series concert at the Royal Theatre. That night in April the combination of Tania’s remarkable conducting of Tchaikovsky’s Overture to Romeo and Juliet and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, the expressive spirit of the orchestra and pianist Krzysztof Jablonski’s passionate interpretation of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand captivated me. Immediately I became a donor to the Victoria Symphony Society. Since then I have happily attended more rehearsals and concerts than I can count. Getting to know Tania and some of the musicians has intensified the pleasure of listening to their music. It is an honour for me to support this Endowment Campaign to ensure the artistic excellence of the VS into the future.

The Victoria Symphony plays a critically important role in our community, by providing quality symphonic entertainment directly to its audience and to the greater community through outreach programs [or is it concerts]. In addition Symphony members are integral to Pacific Opera, Victoria Conservatory of Music and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra; to mention a few. I give time and treasure to the Foundation for the Victoria Symphony to help build an enduring quality musical presence in our community.
