SUMMARY:The National Youth Orchestra of Canada (SPLASH!)
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon of intensity and beauty from the country’s most promising orchestral musicians. \nIn this sweeping 40-minute performance\, The National Youth Orchestra of Canada\, under the baton of Naomi Woo\, explores light and reckoning in seven striking works\, ranging from the spirited charm of Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute to the searing Allegro of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. \nJUNO-nominated Cree composer Andrew Balfour brings a bold contemporary voice with Omaa Biindig\, while Canadian composer Matthew Emery’s Lead Us Home offers a tender plea for belonging. \nThe program moves from the romantic depths of Mahler’s Adagietto to the turbulent energy of Smyth’s Overture to The Wreckers\, building a portrait of an orchestra unafraid to ask big questions—and answer them with sound. \nSymphony SPLASH! is a free public event. Interested in reserved seating? Limited Grandstand tickets are available to purchase from $5 – $68.

SUMMARY:Beethoven Symphony No. 8
DESCRIPTION:Canadian-Romanian conductor Andrei Feher leads a program that balances contemporary voice with classical charm. Kelly-Marie Murphy’s On Rethinking Heroism in the 21st Century\, premiered in 2020\, was composed in response to Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony\, further exploring ideas of humanism and heroism. Filling the majestic Christ Church Cathedral with light-hearted lyricism\, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 is among his most playful works\, reflecting a moment of ease in the composer’s life. Poulenc’s Sinfonietta brings the evening to a sparkling close with its lush harmonies and dancing rhythms. \n
