See the positions and their descriptions below to find out which position will be best for you. All Splash volunteer positions require standing for 4-6 hours in outdoor conditions, no matter what the weather is like. Some positions may require heavy lifting or a criminal record check. Audience Relations

Are you a people person and ok being assertive when necessary? This is the job for you!

General Description

The Audience Relations team is the largest volunteer team, made up of over 100 volunteers. Members of this team are the most visible on site for the audience and their primary focus is to liaise with audience members.

Responsibilties

  • Respond to questions and concerns from members of the public
  • Direct people to various locations on site – info booth, food vendors, bathrooms
  • Monitor safety and security of crowd
  • Ensure safe flow of pedestrian traffic
  • Secure area around Inner Harbour, including Barge docking; Upper and Lower Causeway and stairs;  Government and Belleville Streets; and Legislature, Empress and Royal BC Museum Grounds
  • Assist with signage and schlepping (if required); some lifting may be required

We recommend this position for outgoing people who are comfortable standing and walking outdoors for 5-6 hours and comfortable working with large crowds.

There are 130 Audience Relations positions ranging from 6 am to 12 midnight.

Donation Barrels

Are you friendly and outgoing and comfortable handling money? If yes, we want you!

General Description

Victoria Symphony Splash relies on the donations of attendees to help put the event on, and our donations teams help raise over $35,000 at the event! Donation Barrels volunteers work in pairs at a barrel, greeting passersby and asking if they’ve had a chance to give to Splash.

Responsibilties

  • Set up Barrel location with signage (afternoon shift)
  • Greet members of the public as they enter the event site
  • Engage public to solicit donations for Victoria Symphony
  • Answer questions and direct public to various locations on site
  • Distribute event programs, stickers and buttons as appropriate
  • Assist with the flow of traffic at event
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary
  • Ensure that barrel donations are retrieved and barrels taken down at the end of event (evening shift)

We recommend this position for anyone who has great people skills, an outgoing personality, and wants to help make Splash happen every year!

There are 90 Donation Barrel shifts from 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm, 2:00 pm – 6:30 pm and 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm.

Roving Donations

Are you able to walk for up to 6 hours greeting audience members? Give this position a try!

General Description

Victoria Symphony Splash relies on the donations of attendees to help put the event on, and our donations teams help raise over $35,000 at the event! Roving Donations volunteers roam through the crowds in pairs, asking the audience if they’ve had a chance to give to Splash.

Responsibilties

  • Walk through the crowd; engage public to solicit donations for Victoria Symphony Splash
  • Distribute event programs, stickers and buttons as appropriate
  • Answer questions and direct public to various locations on site
  • Sell glow ropes and batons to the evening audience
  • Ensure that money, buttons and buckets are retrieved at the end of event
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary

We recommend this position for outgoing people who are comfortable approaching strangers, can stand and walk around for up to six hours, and are experienced handling money.

There are 40 Roving Donations positions scheduled in 4.5 – 6-hour shifts from 8 am to 10:30 pm. 

Production

Are you energetic, able to carry heavy objects, and love to run up steps on your Fitbit? Production wants you!

General Description

There’s no picture of a production volunteer, because they never stand still long enough to be photographed! Our very active production team makes sure everything on site is set up and taken down, from carrying folding tables around the site to setting up tents to bringing food to the barge. This physically demanding position is a great way to get a workout and help produce one of the greatest events of the summer.

Responsibilties

  • Set up and tear down of equipment
  • Unload festival material and equipment
  • Carry festival materials on and off the Barge and around the event site
  • Set up tables, chairs and barrels
  • Transport merchandise and materials between event areas
  • Maintain a high standard of safety
  • Safely lift or transport heavy or large objects
  • Help Production Crew Coordinator as required
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary
  • Any duties required by Production Assistants

We recommend this position for any who can work in a team, carry large and/or heavy objects, and enthusiastic about Victoria Symphony Splash.

There are 48 productions positions from 6 am to 12 midnight. 

Merchandise and Information

Do you have experience working with money and a history of excellent customer service? Help us sell merchandise!

General Description

Our Merchandise and Information Tent volunteers work with Victoria Symphony staff to provide information to audience members about the event. Working from one of two tents on site, Merch volunteers use pinpads to complete credit and debit transactions, maintain the security of merchandise, and provide excellent customer service to all tent visitors.

Responsibilties

  • Assist with set up and/or take down of Merchandise & Information Displays
  • Engage public to promote and sell Victoria Symphony merchandise
  • Provide information about Victoria Symphony Splash and the Victoria Symphony
  • Answer questions and direct public to information areas
  • Take orders from customers for merchandise
  • Process credit and cash transactions accurately
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary
  • Secure and track merchandise inventory
  • Some lifting is required

We recommend this position for anyone who is friendly, had cash handling and customer service experience, and is familiar with both the Victoria Symphony and Splash. The ability to deal with extremely high traffic levels of customers and keep calm in stressful situations is essential. This position requires some lifting and a criminal record check (free from your local police station).

There are 20 Merchandise and Information positions available from 9:00 am to 10:30 pm. 

Family Zone

Are you artistic and love working with children? Try working in our Family Zone!

General Description

The Family Zone happens in the afternoon and is attended by over 3,000 people! Kids of all ages come for face-painting, to try out instruments in our Instrument Petting Zoo and to watch children’s performers.

Responsibilties

Face-painting:

  • Use your talents and supplied materials to paint children’s faces
  • Set up working location for face painting
  • Keep activity stations stocked, clean, inviting and safe
  • Provide a safe and fun experience for children
  • Assist with clean up of face painting area at end of shift

Instrument Petting Zoo:

  • Help children try to play classical musical instruments
  • Set up and clean instruments
  • Keep activity stations stocked, clean, inviting and safe
  • Provide a safe and fun experience for children
  • Assist with clean up of Instrument Petting Zoo at end of shift

Note that the Petting Zoo position requires musical experience.

We recommend this position for anyone who is confident, enthusiastic, and comfortable communicating with children, has artistic experience, and always has a smile on their face. This position requires a criminal record check (free from your local police station).

There are 24 Family Zone positions from 12 noon to 4:30 pm. 

Volunteer Services

Do you love working in a support position and making sure everyone is happy? Help our volunteers have a great day!

General Description

Volunteer Services people make sure every volunteer on site has what they need to do their job. From manning the water distribution to distributing food to volunteers to checking volunteers in and out, this position is for friendly and organized individuals.

Responsibilties

  • Be the primary contact for all volunteers on site
  • Confirm extra t-shirts and left over volunteer packages at Volunteer Tent
  • Ensure volunteers have checked in and received water pouch, meal ticket and symphony voucher
  • Ensure volunteers have t-shirt and button
  • Remind volunteers they can pick up their food after their shift (with their ticket) or before if they’re on one of the last shifts of the night
  • Remind volunteers of after party on Wednesday August 3 at 6:30pm
  • Ensure volunteers check out and receive food ticket
  • Distribute water to volunteers and audience members
  • Some heavy lifting may be required

We recommend this position for anyone who is a people pleaser, loves being helpful, and has attention to detail. This position requires some lifting.

There are 12 Volunteer Services positions available from 8:00 am to 12:00 midnight. 

Grandstand and BOH Ushers

Are you a customer service expert and someone who’s always smiling? Help greet and seat the audience in our Grandstand and Band of Heroes seating areas!

General Description

Grandstand and BOH volunteers work with a Victoria Symphony staff member to greet and seat VIPs in special seating on site. This includes setting up the seats, selling any leftover seats and making sure our VIPs have a great night at Splash.

Responsibilties

  • Afternoon shift – Tape off seating in Grandstand (ticketed seating at Splash)
  • Evening shift – Remove tape from Grandstand
  • Meet & greet guests
  • Check in guests and provide them with lanyards/wristbands and programs
  • Sell Grandstand tickets, process credit and cash transactions accurately
  • Keep the Grandstand seats free for guests with tickets
  • Respond to questions and concerns, and direct people to various locations on site
  • Monitor safety and security of crowd, ensure safe flow of pedestrian traffic
  • Communicate with Audience Relations as necessary

We recommend this position for anyone who can keep a cool head in stressful situations, has cash handling and customer service experience, and is familiar with both the Victoria Symphony and Splash. The ability to deal with extremely high traffic levels of customers and be polite and diplomatic is crucial. This position may require some lifting.

There are 10 Grandstand and Band of Heroes positions available from 1:00 pm to 10:30 pm.
